Sonatype names new chiefs as AI demand drives growth

Sonatype has appointed Casey Watson as Chief Revenue Officer, Jason McClelland as Chief Marketing Officer, and Sherri Manning as Chief Human Resources Officer, expanding the software company's executive team.

The appointments come as Sonatype scales its revenue, marketing, and people operations in response to rising demand from large companies for secure AI-driven software development.

Watson joins after serving as Senior Vice President of Sales for North America at OneTrust. Earlier, he held leadership roles at VMware Tanzu, R3, Siemplify, and Docker. He brings more than three decades of experience across software engineering and sales.

As Chief Revenue Officer, he will oversee Sonatype's global revenue strategy and go-to-market execution, including alignment between pre-sales and post-sales teams.

McClelland joins with experience at Salesforce, Adobe, Heroku, and DataStax. As Chief Marketing Officer, he will lead marketing efforts tied to Sonatype's artificial intelligence and agentic development initiatives.

Manning was most recently Chief People Officer at Olo and has also held roles at BigCommerce and Q2ebanking. She joins to lead Sonatype's human resources strategy as the company expands its global workforce.

Sonatype is known for Nexus Repository and for serving as steward of Maven Central, a major repository used by developers working with Java and related software packages. The company positions its business around helping customers manage open source, third-party, and AI-generated code within software supply chains.

That focus places Sonatype in one of the technology market's more active segments, where software companies are trying to address security concerns tied to open source components and the growing use of AI tools in development workflows.

Chief Executive Officer Bhagwat Swaroop linked the hires to those market shifts.

"Sonatype is operating at the intersection of three of the most important forces in technology today: AI, open source, and cybersecurity," Swaroop said.

"Casey, Jason, and Sherri bring the experience and leadership we need to scale growth, lead our marketing initiatives, and continue building a high-performance culture that matches the pace of AI," he said.

Watson said customers are under pressure to deliver software more quickly without weakening safeguards around code and software supply chains.

"Organisations today are under increasing pressure to innovate faster while maintaining trust and security across the software supply chain," Watson said.

McClelland pointed to the changing nature of software development and the role of AI tools in that shift.
